Log Cabin Preservation
This article is reprinted from the February 2003
newsletter.
One
of the tenets of this Society is preserving the past. It's in our
logo, it goes on everything that we publish, now we need to put
those words into action. The Log Cabin sits on the campus of Milton
High School, but as we all know the future of the high school is
in limbo, almost undoubtedly to be moved to a new location.
So now is the time to make the cabin a real functioning part of
the Society's programs, not just its show piece during Alpharetta's
Heritage Day and occasional school field trips. The Board has asked
that a committee led by Ben Statham, Chair of the Heritage Committee
and Joy Ross, Chair of the Preservation Committee undertake that
mission.
The committee, consisting of Norm and Martine Broadwell, Chestene
Carter, Betty Peyton, Jeannie Goodwin, Sonja Holcombe, Julie Benson,
Diana Wilcox, Marjean Birt and Billy Bates held a brief organizational
meeting at the cabin recently. It decided on the following first
steps; an inventory of the contents of the cabin; make the cabin
structurally sound; a thorough cleaning; a formal letter to the
Fulton County School Board and the City of Alpharetta asking for
the renewal of the lease of the cabin by the Society.
The committee has set a tentative date for the first clean up as
March 22nd, 10:00 a.m.
The committee would like to see members step forward to act as
docents for the cabin with a schedule of on-going educational activities.
It is the ultimate goal, albeit, an ambitious one, to make the cabin
a fully functional interactive museum, similar to the Tullie Smith
House at the Atlanta History Center. It is possible for this Society
to do this. What better way to share our cultural heritage with
the community, and to honor those hard working young men who crafted
this cabin over 70 years ago?
If you would like to be a part of this endeavor, contact the Society
at 770-475-4663, call Ben Statham at 770-475-9214 or Joy Ross at
770-442-9960. This Society has incredible human resources, let's
put them to use by being a pro-active organization with work on
the Log Cabin.
